Offshore Drilling Companies - 50 Offshore Drilling Companies To Get You Started

Are you looking for a list of offshore drilling companies because you are looking for a job in an offshore oil rig? Have you tried the big boys like Shell and BP, etc? No results, or don’t want to try them for some reason?

Besides the obvious list of big boys like Shell and BP, you can also look for offshore drilling companies which do wildcatting or provide sub-contracting offshore oil drilling services to the major players. There are potentially hundreds of smaller companies which do this. Rather than cover the whole spectrum of finding oil, drilling for it and then refining and distributing the oil, these relatively small companies (for the oil and gas industry) concentrate on providing offshore drilling services. Some of them were formed during the last slump in oil prices by far-sighted investors with deep pockets, buying up equipment for pennies on the dollar. Many more were popped up just before the current boom in oil prices, or just recently to cater for the spike in demand for oil drilling services.

Here is a list of 50 offshore drilling companies to get you started:

  • Nabors Industries

  • Transocean

  • Diamond Offshore

  • Rowan Companies

  • Schlumberger

  • Stena Drilling

  • Tesco Drilling

  • Transocean Sedco

  • Prosafe ASA

  • Abbot Group

  • Acteon

  • Akita Drilling

  • Altinex

  • Atwood Oceanics

  • Baker Hughes

  • China Oilfield Services

  • Crosco Drilling

  • Dolphin Drilling

  • Egyptian Drilling Company

  • Franklin Howard International

  • Fred. Olsen Energy

  • Geoservices

  • Global Marine Drilling

  • GlobalSantaFe

  • IKM Subsea Design

  • Japan Drilling Co

  • KCA Deutag Drilling

  • Maersk Contractors

  • Metzke Engineering

  • Noble Drilling

  • Pajak Engineering

  • Parker Drilling

  • PetroMena

  • Reamco

  • Seadrill

  • Smedvig

  • Smith International

  • ENSCO International

  • BLAKE Offshore

  • CDIS

  • Coastal Drilling Company

  • Crosco

  • Extended Reach Drilling

  • Frigstad Offshore

  • Jindal Drilling & Industries

  • KCA DEUTAG Drilling

  • Marine Drilling Companies

  • National Drilling Services

  • Neptune Drilling

  • Ocean Rig

Do note that these are just 50 out of hundreds, with many more new companies formed each month to cater for the growing demand of the oil rush. As the entire oil and gas industry is very fast-moving right now, there is no guarantee that all the companies will still be around. After all, the major players like Shell will almost certainly try to buy them up to secure their own supply of oil rigs and crew. Some of these companies provide both onshore and offshore services and may even provide pipelining services, so be sure to make it clear in your cover letter and resume/cv.

Not all of the companies have websites or email. You may need to do some digging to find their snail mail or off-line address so that you can send them you cover letter and resume through the post office.

To get an offshore drilling job, you can go to the major players, or you can try the smaller specialist offshore drilling companies. The major players are of course more stable (at least during the oil boom). The smaller companies, on the other hand, provide more opportunity for advancement if you are bright and hardworking.

Each summer, Breakthrough seeks five to ten outstanding young analysts, writers, and thought leaders for the Breakthrough Generation Fellowship. Fellows will contribute writing and research to one our three main issue areas at the Breakthrough Institute: EnergyConservation, or Food & Farming. Fellowships are highly competitive — only 5-10 percent of applicants are generally accepted — and involve cutting-edge writing, research, and public policy analysis. See below for more information on how to apply.

Breakthrough Generation 2018 fellowships will take place mid-June to mid-August 2018. The first two weeks will be dedicated to Breakthrough Bootcamp, an intellectual crash course in Breakthrough’s history and research. If you have a scheduling conflict with these dates, please email us as soon as possible to discuss.

Benefits:

  • The fellowship runs for ten weeks between June and August and pays $600 per week.

  • Fellows work 40 hours per week, and may be considered for full-time employment at the end of the fellowship. Breakthrough does not provide housing.

Requirements:

  • Final-year undergraduates, college graduates, and postgraduates are eligible to apply for the fellowship.

  • Fellowships are open to applicants from any country.

Application:

Cover Letter

Please indicate at the top of your cover letter which of the three research areas you wish to be considered for: Energy, Conservation, or Food & Farming. An excellent cover letter will display a thorough understanding of Breakthrough’s work and ideas, and discuss at least one of our publications and/or An Ecomodernist Manifesto or Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus’s book Break Through. Please limit your cover letter to one page maximum.

CV/Resume

Please limit your resume or CV to two pages maximum.

Three Writing Samples

1) A 500-1000 word argumentative essay or op-ed (does not have to be published) on a subject of your choice that demonstrates an ability to make a focused argument in a clear, convincing, and accessible way. This writing sample is evaluated for evidence of critical thinking and general writing skills. For examples of opinion pieces written by Breakthrough staff, see herehere, and here.

2) A research paper, preferably between 15-20 pages. This does not need to have been published, but should demonstrate an ability to research and analyze a subject in more depth. It is recommended, but not required, that the topic of the research paper be relevant to the program area you are applying to.

3) An additional writing sample of your choosing — this can be an opinion piece, a research paper, a policy memo, or any other piece of writing that complements the first two samples.

Differentiation 101 - A Basic Guide to Differentiated Instruction

Differentiation. Differentiated Curriculum. Differentiated Instructional Strategies. At conferences, parent gatherings, and curriculum planning meetings, the term differentiation is thrown around like a Frisbee. As a newly hired teacher, I recall nodding my head and blinking blankly whenever the term was whizzed at me. The definition of differentiation is taken for granted; thus, no one ever pauses to tell what differentiation means. This article will do just that.

In a nutshell, differentiation–which is sometimes called differentiated instruction–refers to a method of curriculum planning and instruction that offers learners a wide variety of ways to acquire understanding. The following bullet points offer a quick and dirty guide to differentiated instruction. These bullets outline the three elements of the curriculum that can be differentiated as well as the three learner characteristics that can be taken into account while differentiating your instruction.

The following elements of your curriculum can be differentiated

CONTENT: Content is considered the “stuff” of the curriculum. This “stuff” includes what the instructor plans for learners to understand as well as the ways the learner will gain access to the desired knowledge and skills. To differentiate according to Content, an instructor can do the following:

  • Provide text on multiple levels of difficulty

  • Use part-to-whole or whole-to-part instruction

  • Use manipulatives, Internet resources, audio recordings, and other non-conventional “text”

PROCESS: Process refers to the activities in which learners engage in order to gain understanding of the subject. A conventional way to think about Process is to consider it as the things learners do in the class and for homework. To differentiate according to Process, the instructor can do the following:

  • Vary amount of support given by the instructor

  • Give learners choices about how they express what they learn

  • Provide varied assignment options at differing levels of difficulty or based on learner interests

PRODUCT: Products are the end result, the things learners create to demonstrate what they understand and/or are able to do after they have moved through the curriculum. Some examples of learning products are essays, poems, quiz/test answers, presentations, blogs, websites, skits, videos, plays, and other dramatizations. To differentiate according to Product, the instructor can do the following:

  • Provide rubrics (a grid showing how learners will be assessed) for assignments

  • Vary types of resources learners can use in preparing products (text, Internet resources, books, encyclopedias, interviews, tours, pamphlets, etc)

  • Allow learners to design a product around essential learning goals-to express what they know in varied ways (e.g. speaking, writing, drawing)

The following are three learner characteristics instructors can take into account when planning to differentiate:

READINESS: Readiness refers to the understanding and preparedness learners have at the start of study. Because learners vary in preparation and knowledge (in other words, what they bring to the classroom and to specific assignments), they require different levels of difficulty. To differentiate according to Readiness, instructors can do the following:

  • Add student teach-backs to assignments

  • Add or remove peer conferencing, instruction, and models for a task

  • Make the task more or less familiar (e.g. by adding or removing information and resources)

INTERESTS: Interests, in terms of differentiation, can be thought of as the learner’s “academic taste buds.” Because learners have different taste buds, instructors can align curriculum with topics or pursuits that satisfy the palate of each learner. To differentiate according to Interest, instructors can do the following

  • Provide a wide variety of choices for topics and products

  • Provide a variety of avenues for learner exploration of a topic

  • Give learners a choice of tasks and products, including learner-designed options

LEARNING PROFILE: Just as the height and shape of students vary (even within the same grade), so do their learner profiles. No matter how students are grouped, each group will have learners with different interests, levels of readiness, learning styles, talents, and standardized test scores. One understanding of learning styles is Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner’s theory delineates the following categories: Bodily-kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Verbal-linguistic, Logical-mathematical, Naturalistic, Intrapersonal, Visual-spatial, and Musical. To differentiate according to Learning Profile, instructors can do the following:

  • Provide choice of spaces for activities (e.g. desks, couches, and floor seating)

  • Present information in a variety of ways (video, handout, lecture, peer-to-peer talks)

  • Provide learning opportunities in various modes (musical, visual display, movement and manipulatives)

Differentiation helps instructors engineer curriculum that reaches the widest number of learners possible. With the above guide highlighting the primary tenets of differentiation, you can approach your curriculum-and the next faculty meeting-with a basket full of knowledge and tools to differentiate in all of your curriculum.

Why Is It So Important For Women of All Ages to Be Daring/Fearless at Work?

+ Why is it so important for women of all ages to be daring/fearless at work?

First, let’s define what “daring” and “fearless” mean when we’re talking about work. In today’s economy, being daring and fearless at work means knowing what your deal is, and how to deal. In my book and in my work, the word “Deal” refers to your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – in fact, chapter 2 of the book is actually titled, “Deal.” Being daring and fearless means you lead with your strengths and opportunities, while keeping your weaknesses and threats in check as much as possible. If you’ve built your life (and/or career) around a certain routine or skill set, and you’ve been successful at it, it’s easy to see why you might want to stay in your current parking spot rather than deal with change, or seek out and negotiate a new deal. Being daring and fearless means you resist that inertia, because what you don’t do to bring about positive change in your deal, actually can hurt you. At some point, we all need to dare re-vamp our deal.

+ What are some ways women can enact their fearlessness at work? What should they not do?

The most important way that women can enact their daring and fearlessness at work is to cultivate influential and powerful people who can champion you – not just assist, mentor or advise you. You need to cultivate, secure and exchange your talents with those of sponsors – persons of power and influence who actively champion your mission and vision. If working under the tutelage of a sponsor seems counter-intuitive to being daring or fearless, please know that a sponsor with access to decision makers, financial resources, and proprietary information that you can’t access on your own can make you very daring and fearless indeed. Finding a sponsor involves seeking out someone who can motivate you to dare even further, which also means you have to learn about your sponsor’s priorities, motivations and needs, and where there are common ground and mutual benefit for both of you. Working with a sponsor is an exchange. It works best when there are complementary skills and talents at work.

As for what women should not do to enact their fearlessness at work:don’t confuse being daring and fearless with being reckless or ruthless. Our current economic state is grave evidence that morally or ethically suspect activity is not only reckless but can have dire consequences for your life, not just your career. Also, review the definition of the word “ruthless,” which has become a synonym for “driven” or “tenacious” – not an apt one. In that regard, know the values of the firm and industry in which you operate; then decide how you and they define “ruthless” and how that jibes with your own ethics, values, morals and ideals. Chapter 7 of my book, titled “Reason,” discusses this issue in great detail, especially how to protect yourself in situations where your definition of daring and fearless may conflict with that of your company or industry.

+ What are the benefits for working women to be more daring or fearless?

Demonstrating that you can 1) create, secure and manage new revenue streams, or 2) devise effective ways to reduce costs, will make you feel very daring and fearless. The benefits are that you increase your conviction, competence and confidence, becoming more daring and fearless. Being skilled at driving revenue or reducing costs makes you one of the most valuable persons at any organization, in your own business or in another organization, whether in the public, corporate or nonprofit sector. Increasing revenue and/or containing costs both involve extreme focus, research, empathy, and drive. Here’s why:

Focus, because to be daring and fearless you really have to become an expert in your industry, which also means you are constantly looking for new or better products, services or clients to explore.

Research, because you have to demonstrate and substantiate that your recommendations are based on real-world facts and quantitative metrics.

Empathy, because focus and research often start with listening, observing, or staying quiet, before peppering someone with questions and volunteering suggestions.

Drive, because sometimes you need to muster up, shore up and deploy different kinds and levels of energy and intellectual firepower than those within your usual comfort level or way of operating. It takes a lot of drive to adapt to the point where you are in fact daring and fearless – as opposed to reckless or compromised.

+ Where can women go for more info and resources on being daring/fearless at work (other than your site/book, which we will link to)?

Here are just a few of my favorite books about being daring and fearless, including how to negotiate a better deal and how to sell anyone almost anything.

1. Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful (Hyperion, 2007)

2. Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton, Now, Discover Your Strengths (Free Press, 2001)

3. David Allen, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity (Penguin, 2002)

4. G. Richard Shell, Bargaining for Advantage: Negotiation Strategies for Reasonable People, (Viking, 2000)

5. Jeffrey J. Fox, How to Become a Rainmaker: The RulesFor Getting and Keeping Customers and Clients (Hyperion, 2000)
